Salt alum publishes his first book >>06.04.10 >> This is the best kind of news. We're truly excited to announce the release of White Horses by Doug Milliken, the first book by our very own Salt writing alum, published by NaDa Publishing.
In Doug's own words, the book "is a (for lack of a better, more succinct term) collection of interconnected short stories (or, alternately, a piece-meal collage novella) about a man who can't tell his dreams and memories from his present-tense reality, countered by the shattered, lonesome life his wife leads in his semi-absence. A real wellspring of good-times and cheer! C'mon, what'd you expect me to write? This might be the closest thing to a beach book anyone's likely to get out of me." Ha! Thanks Doug. We'll definitely excited to give it a read for ourselves. BIG Congratulations!

Alum wins 1st place for Social Issues reporting in Oregon >>05.28.10 >> Last Saturday, the Oregon chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists held their annual award banquet ceremony, and alum Amanda Waldroupe was awarded 1st Place in Social Issues reporting (in the circulation under 8,000 category) for the story she wrote about the resurgence of heroin in Portland, Oregon.
In reflecting on writing this acclaimed piece, Amanda tells us that "the skills I learned at Salt to gain access, observe a subject, and then tell his story ethically and with compassion and creativity were at the fore of the entire reporting process for this story. And what [the award] proves to me that I'm well on my way to becoming a good journalist, and a good storyteller."
From where we sit, Amanda, looks like you're already there! Well done.

Local newspaper and magazine editors visit Salt's writing class>>04.17.09 >> For the last ten weeks, local newspaper and magazine editors have been dropping by in Salt's writing class to share their knowledge and tips for the writing students. Friday, April 17 marked the final visit with the Portland Phoenix's managing editor Jeff Inglis.
Other visitors included Chris Busby, the editor of the Bollard; Paul Doiron, the editor of Down East Magazine, Nancy Heiser, managing editor of Port City Life and David Tyler, the editor of the The Working Waterfront and the The Island Journal
While some stuck to their lecture outline and talking points, some editors had some interesting stories to tell about the lengths they are willing to go to for the story.
During his visit, Busby regailed the class with an entertaining story about digging through people's trash while reporting "Chasing Chellie". It also got students thinking about the ethical implications of doing similar stuff for their own stories.
While all editors answered questions about the particulars of their publication, they also fielded any and all questions students had about the fate of journalism, freelancing, how to find and report stories, and rank gossip about Portland's journalism scene.
Students also had the opportunity to pitch for publication the 1,000 and 3,000-word stories they have been working on all semester.
"It was great to meeting these people face to face outside of their offices, and actually hash out our stories with people who do this for a living in the real world," says Katie Fuller, a current writing student.
Salt enjoys a visit from the Bureau for International Reporting >>04.17.09 >> During an all class "Brown Bag Lunch", students spent time with Kira Kay and Jason Maloney from The Bureau of International Reporting talking about social documentary video work for television in far away and underrepresented places. Malaga Island exhibit's February 27 opening>>03.26.09 >> "Malaga Island: A Story Best Left Untold," a collaborative radio documentary and photo essay by Salt teachers Rob Rosenthal and Kate Philbrick opened at Salt on February 27, and drew well over 60 people, including descendants of Malaga residents, to the Salt gallery.
Rosenthal's hour-long documentary and Philbrick's present-day photographs and constructed imagery of historical documents tell the story of how the residents of Malaga Island, a small island near Phippsburg, Maine, were evicted from their homes in 1912.
After a presentation of Rosenthal's documentary, a guest panel of descendants, Portland Press Herald columnist and Salt board member Bill Nemitz, and members of Maine's African-American community led a discussion of Malaga Island and the effects the eviction has today.
For more information about Malaga Island and the exhibit, please visit www.malagaislandmaine.org.
Congrats to Kate and Rob for their hard work over the course of two years to tell this story.

Spring 2009 Scholarship Winners Announced! >>11.12.08 >> Each semester, we offer Salt applicants the opportunity to apply to win scholarship towards their Salt tuition by submitting their portfolios for competition review. Every year, we have a bevy of deserved winners. This year's group takes home a $3000 prize applied to their spring tuition. Congratulations to our spring 2009 winners: Autumn Caviness, Katie Fuller, and Emily Anderson!
Radio// Autumn Caviness >> Autumn teaches her students "to pay attention to their intrapersonal communication - the communication within that speaks to their passion - [and to explore] life's avenues and pathways, which make them feel as if they have come home." We hope to welcome you home, Autumn, and cannot wait to hear that urban beat, that passion that keeps you up at night.
Writing// Katie Fuller >> Katie's innate curiosity drives her to wonder about the homeless man she passes on her way to work, the Methodist pastor and his parishioners down the street from her apartment, and the man selling hot dogs day after day at his landmark hot dog stand. It has driven her as far as South Africa and Russia and as close as her own front porch and family's history. Now it drives her to Salt where she hopes to continue to "scratch the gritty surface of the world around her."
Photography// Emily Anderson >>
Growing up in France in an American family meant that freelance photographer, Emily had to navigate between two cultures. As a result, she developed a keen sense of observation and a desire "to experience the diversity of our world." She has since traveled extensively, camera in hand, and comes to Salt to join "a photography community" where she "can give [her] undivided attention to developing a more deliberate photographic practice and to listening more carefully to [her] life and the lives of the people around [her]."

561 Congress Street
We've Moved >>08.18.08 >> In case you haven't heard, Salt has a new place to call home: 561 Congress Street. In the heart of Portland's Downtown Arts District, our new 7,000 square foot, first floor space is being redesigned from the floor up. Both Zachau Construction of Freeport and architects and designers at SMRT of Portland have created a space crafted especially for the unique needs of both our students and our supportive community of artists and documentary lovers. In addition to creative classrooms and beautiful staff offices, we will soon complete construction on a 50-seat auditorium/movie theater/lecture hall with a spacious adjoining gallery space. Beyond all the fabulous functional aspects that we've considered, architectural details, green design, and handicap accessibility have been essential guiding factors in the creation of our new spot. Our hope is that the new Salt home is not only a great place to learn, but also an exciting place for community events that center around Salt's driving force: great documentary work. Once we're up and running in September, stop by and see us!

New Look // Same Salt >>08.16.08 >> Welcome to our new website! The masterminds at Slickfish Studios and Yellahoose are responsible for the complete overhaul of our website and a brand spanking new database. They've been essential in helping us find new ways to showcase the great work of our students and to better communicate what we're all about to the rest of the world. This site also launches a new look for Salt - one that we hope compliments the kind of gritty, in-depth, and relevant stories our students tackle every semester, documents our current metamorphosis, and represents the essence of who we are and have always been. While our home, our tools (yeah for digital photography!), and our look have changed - our mission remains the same: to educate promote documentary storytellers.

Meet our Tuition Scholarship Competition Winners! >>08.16.08 >> Each semester, we offer Salt applicants the opportunity to apply to win $3000 towards their Salt tuition by submitting their portfolios for competition review. Every year, we have a bevy of deserved winners. Congratulations to our fall 2008 winners: Sarah Jessee, Isaac Kestenbaum, and Heather Noonan!
Radio// Sarah Jessee
"Having been lonely in my own radio endeavors for so long, I'm ready to come to Salt, to find my community," Sarah told us. As co-anchor of the Saturday Evening News at Pacifica radio's KPFA,
Sarah Jessee knows a thing or two about breaking news and deadlines. Now she's ready to slow down, make connections, and build confidence and has chosen Salt as the place to do this because she feels our program "is not about making yourself heard-it's about listening." We're so excited to welcome Sarah into our Salt family.
Writing// Isaac Kestenbaum
Issac had been writing for the Portland Press Herald for almost a year when he applied to Salt. After many months focused on daily reporting, he looks forward to immersing himself entirely in a story, and believes that Salt can "show him the difference between reporting and writing, between filing a story and telling a story." You betcha.
Photography// Heather Noonan
While earning a BA in Photography from the University of the Arts, Heather Noonan's studio work received praise for being "creative and surprising with excellent composition and a strong point of view." But Heather is also drawn to telling stories visually and chose Salt because it offers "an environment where everyone is working in the documentary style." Just wait until you get here Heather!
