Meet Caitlin Shetterly: Our writing instructor for fall 2011 >>

We are so excited to introduce to you to the fourth and final member of our faculty team for the fall 2011 semester. Our new writing instructor Caitlin Shetterly is an author, regular contributor to National Public Radio and artistic director for a local theater company, and she joins Christine Heinz, Andres Gonzalez and Michael May to form our new team.

"I am thrilled and honored to come on as part of the new Salt team. I'm sure it will be one of the most exciting and gratifying years of my life," says Shetterly.

And we're equally as excited as well. Salt Board Trustee and Documentary Filmmaker Gary Robinov says it best, "Caitlin is not only an accomplished author, but she also brings her skills as a frequent contributor to NPR and as the Artistic Director of the Winter Harbor Theatre -- thus providing the students at Salt a unique opportunity and understanding of real world experience across a multitude of media."

meet michael may: our radio instructor for fall 2011 >>

We are absolutely thrilled to announce the appointment of another faculty member for the fall 2011 semester. Michael May is a radio producer, freelance journalist and former managing editor at the Texas Observer, who joins both Christine Heinz and Andres Gonzalez as a part of the new Salt faculty team as our instructor for radio.

"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to teach at Salt. Although I wasn't a student myself, Salt's reputation speaks for itself. The graduates working in radio are passionate, creative professionals, and many of them have told me that Salt was a transformative experience in their career," Michael says. I'm particularly looking forward to working in such a collaborative environment, sharing my own philosophy on producing intimate and surprising radio documentaries, and learning from the exceptional students that Salt attracts."

All of these wonderful new additions bring a variety of experience and unique skills to the table and are passionate about educating the next generation of Salt storytellers. After recently losing our four-person faculty team for a variety of personal reasons, we could not be more optimistic about the way this new team of enthusiastic and seasoned storytellers is coming together.

One member of the Salt family, NPR Northeast Bureau Chief and Salt Board Trustee Andrea de Leon is particularly encouraged by the news. "You can already find Salt graduates at NPR, Marketplace, Story Corps, RadioLab, This American Life and working for most of the other top producers of stories for the public radio audience," says DeLeon. "Adding an instructor of Michael's caliber and national reputation will make a Salt education even more valuable for students who want to break into the field."

Meet the fall 2011 faculty members for multimedia and photography>>

We are extremely proud and excited to announce the addition of two new faculty member for the fall 2011 semester. We welcome back two of our kindest and most talented alums Andres Gonzalez and Christine Heinz into Salt's classrooms as educators for our photography track [Gonzalez] and the yet-to-be-named all track course focusing on the future of many-mediaed journalism [Heinz].

Both alums bring a variety of experience and unique skills to the table and are particularly passionate about taking the time to give back by focusing their attention on the next generation of media makers. Interestly enough, Andres and Christine met in Portland ten years ago, attending Salt in back to back semesters as photography students, randomly meeting as roomates. They continued to follow parallel paths as classmates in graduate school at Ohio University's School of Visual Communication. From there, their paths diverged and each has had several years of diverse experiences and wonderful influence on the documentary world in a variety of ways. Reunited in a true 360-degree moment, the two are excited to return to Salt, bringing their love of the work and potential growth of up and coming artists with them.

Here's what our Executive Director Donna Galluzzo has to say about our new additions: "As an educational institution, it's our greatest hope that we would graduate students who would be able to come back to Salt and give back to the program in the most creative and impactful way possible, by teaching here. Christine and Andres both bring a host of ideas and more than ten years of professional experiences, worldwide, that will infuse the curriculum in ways that we couldn't have imagined. Our fall students undoubtedly will have one of the most exciting educational experiences of their lives."

Lots of excitement in the air at 561 Congress, but this opportunity means more than just a new job to these two. "My Salt experience opened me up to the world in a way I didn't know was possible," says Andres "and I'm unbelievably excited to gift that forward after ten years. Salt students are a unique breed, and I really look forward to reconnecting with them as a teacher, to inspire, and be inspired by the process of grinding through documentary work."

After being involved with Salt for many years now, Christine is looking forward to being on the teaching side of things. "I'm thrilled to play a key role in the development of Salt's ever-evolving curriculum," says Christine "to explore with my students all the options and opportunities this multimedia world of has to offer, all the while keeping the tenents of documentary work that I learned as a Salt student ten years ago close to the chest, compromising nothing in the realm of ethical storytelling. For me, the foundation of teaching rests in nurturing students' talents and motivating them to put forth their best work possible, regardless of the medium. I am just excited by the endless possibilities. This is such a unique time for journalists of all kinds and I am happy to see Salt begin to truly navigate these 21st century waters."

Alum plays large role in upcoming documentary film >>

We are excited to hear that Beth Leonard one of our alums has played a large role in the upcoming documentary film A Second Knock at the Door as Line Producer and Assistant Director. This powerful film explores the truth behind military deaths due to friendly fire and what is reported to the soldier's family. The film is a follow up to a graduate thesis by Chris Grimes while at Northwestern University's school of Public Policy & Administration. According to the film's website, "this documentary will not only explore each incident, but more importantly tell the unique stories of these courageous men from across America's vast landscape."

We are so very proud of Jacqui Shine, Salt alum and founder of Write Your Principal, a writing campaign encouraging all of us to do just that, write your high school principal to ask what they are doing to make their school a safer place to be. "Inspired by my friend Jennifer Walters, I'm encouraging people disheartened and distressed by the deaths of five young men who took their own lives in part because of anti-GLBTQ bullying in September to write letters to their high school principals. Will you join us?"

Salt hires new Director of Educational Programs >>

We're excited to welcome a new addition to the Salt family as our new Director of Educational Programs. Melanie Nichols was chosen out of a field of more than 300 applicants. A graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, she also holds a M.A. in counseling from St. Joseph College. Over the past 19 years, she has custom designed and facilitated over 200 workshops focusing on leadership, applying adventure concepts in the classroom, behavioral styles, emotional intelligence and interpersonal skill building.

Applying her masters in counseling to coaching, counseling, training and developing staff, Melanie believes in "collaborating with co-workers to find creative ways to solve problems and bring out their strengths [in helping to build] relationships based on trust and respect, which leads to greater productivity and satisfaction." We couldn't be happier to invite such a positive approach into the Salt fold. Melanie's first day is November 15th. Feel free to come by and say hello!

Alum's work featured by PBS Newshour >>

The multimedia work of our very own [ photographer and multimedia producer ] Kelly Creedon has garnered some attention by PBS Newshour, when producer Diane Lincoln Estes ran into her at a recent protest by advocacy group City Life/Vida Urbana in Boston.

"We thought her audio sound slides were really powerful" and so they've posted a selection of her project online, along with her thoughts about the issue. The project, called We Shall Not Be Moved, tells the story of a growing grassroots movement that is using the power of bringing people together to help keep families in their homes after foreclosure. The work is and on-going multimedia mix of audio and still images produced by Kelly in conjunction with the City Life/Vida Urbana and the Bank Tenant Association.

"I had started hearing about City Life eviction blockades from other folks who were attending and was just overwhelmed with the human side of the story," Kelly says. And so tell that story is just what she did. We're glad to see those Salt storytelling instincts in full force! Congrats on the great work, Kelly! Salt and Creative Nonfiction announce a writing contest >>

For the first time ever, we're collaborating with Creative Nonfiction and co-sponsoring a writing contest with a $5,000 1st prize! We are seeking essays inspired by the theme The Night.

Essays must be vivid and dramatic; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with a significant element of research or information, and reach for some universal or deeper meaning in personal experiences. We're looking for well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice.

Best Essay will be awarded $5,000 plus publication in the Summer 2011 issue of Creative Nonfiction magazine. One runner-up will receive $2,500 plus publication online at creativenonfiction.org. For accepted applicants, contest awards can also be used directly towards Salt tuition.

GUIDELINES: Essays must be unpublished, 4,000 words maximum, postmarked by January 10, 2011, and clearly marked "The Night" on both the essay and the outside of the envelope. Author's name and contact information should appear in a cover letter, but not on the manuscript itself. There is a $20 reading fee (or send a reading fee of $25 to include a 4-issue CNF subscription); multiple entries are welcome ($20/essay) as are entries from outside the U.S. (though subscription shipping costs do apply). Please send manuscript, accompanied by a cover letter with complete contact information including the title of the essay, SASE and payment to:

Exhibit at Maine State Museum shows work by Salt alums >>

On April 15, 2010, long-time Stinson Seafood employees (from left to right) Nancy Harrington, Lela Anderson, and Mytress Harrington, packed the last three sardine cans processed in America. These three cans, other objects and photographs, and documentary videos related to Stinson's and the herring fishery are featured in the Maine State Museum's newest exhibit, End of the Line: America's Last Sardine Cannery, will be on view through September 4, 2010.

The exhibit, located in the museum's lobby, also features two videos showing excerpts from The Sardine Show, produced by the University of Maine Television Services for the Maine Sardine Council in the 1980s, and Canned, a documentary of the last days at Stinson Seafood by Salt radio alum J Holt and Salt writing alum Madeleine Pryor. Salt alum publishes his first book >>

This is the best kind of news. We're truly excited to announce the release of White Horses by Doug Milliken, the first book by our very own Salt writing alum, published by NaDa Publishing.

In Doug's own words, the book "is a (for lack of a better, more succinct term) collection of interconnected short stories (or, alternately, a piece-meal collage novella) about a man who can't tell his dreams and memories from his present-tense reality, countered by the shattered, lonesome life his wife leads in his semi-absence. A real wellspring of good-times and cheer! C'mon, what'd you expect me to write? This might be the closest thing to a beach book anyone's likely to get out of me." Ha! Thanks Doug. We'll definitely excited to give it a read for ourselves. BIG Congratulations!

Alum wins 1st place for Social Issues reporting in Oregon >>

Last Saturday, the Oregon chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists held their annual award banquet ceremony, and alum Amanda Waldroupe was awarded 1st Place in Social Issues reporting (in the circulation under 8,000 category) for the story she wrote about the resurgence of heroin in Portland, Oregon.

In reflecting on writing this acclaimed piece, Amanda tells us that "the skills I learned at Salt to gain access, observe a subject, and then tell his story ethically and with compassion and creativity were at the fore of the entire reporting process for this story. Please join Human Rights photographer Thatcher Cook and students of his Darjeeling India workshop on July 11th from 6-9 PM for the first ever Darjeeling Tea and Dumping Party. The event is hosted by the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine and will include a silent auction of both color and black and white prints shot on assignment in the tea plantations of North East India. For a small donation of five dollars, you can browse and bid on fine art prints while sampling authentic Darjeeling tea and momos (Indian dumplings). All proceeds from this event will go towards expanding educational opportunities for the children of Kalej Valley, a remote tea plantation community near Darjeeling, India. Name and image chosen for the May 21 Salt opening

Students and faculty gathered in Salt's Red Room last Tuesday, April 21 and chose the name and image for their gallery showing on Thursday, May 21 (be there!) Students voted overnight for the show's image, and an image from photo student Briget Ganske's essay on bee keeping was chosen. After some heated discussion, talking over each other, debating what best captured the documentary spirit of our semester-long pursuits, trying to raise hands and be polite, and voting, the show title was determined: inside out there. Local newspaper and magazine editors visit Salt's writing class>>

For the last ten weeks, local newspaper and magazine editors have been dropping by in Salt's writing class to share their knowledge and tips for the writing students. Friday, April 17 marked the final visit with the Portland Phoenix's managing editor Jeff Inglis. Other visitors included Chris Busby, the editor of the Bollard; Paul Doiron, the editor of Down East Magazine, Nancy Heiser, managing editor of Port City Life and David Tyler, the editor of the The Working Waterfront and the The Island Journal While some stuck to their lecture outline and talking points, some editors had some interesting stories to tell about the lengths they are willing to go to for the story. During his visit, Busby regailed the class with an entertaining story about digging through people's trash while reporting "Chasing Chellie". It also got students thinking about the ethical implications of doing similar stuff for their own stories. While all editors answered questions about the particulars of their publication, they also fielded any and all questions students had about the fate of journalism, freelancing, how to find and report stories, and rank gossip about Portland's journalism scene. Students also had the opportunity to pitch for publication the 1,000 and 3,000-word stories they have been working on all semester. "It was great to meeting these people face to face outside of their offices, and actually hash out our stories with people who do this for a living in the real world," says Katie Fuller, a current writing student.

While on a fancy resort somewhere on the Caribbean's Turks and Caicos giving a lecture on his book The Republic of Pirates and sipping rum, Salt writing instructor Colin Woodard dug into the recent resignation of Turks and Caicos Prime Minister Michael Misick. Misick resigned amidst a corruption investigation. The British government has suspended the constitution and imposed direct rule over the island. Malaga Island exhibit's February 27 opening>>

"Malaga Island: A Story Best Left Untold," a collaborative radio documentary and photo essay by Salt teachers Rob Rosenthal and Kate Philbrick opened at Salt on February 27, and drew well over 60 people, including descendants of Malaga residents, to the Salt gallery. Rosenthal's hour-long documentary and Philbrick's present-day photographs and constructed imagery of historical documents tell the story of how the residents of Malaga Island, a small island near Phippsburg, Maine, were evicted from their homes in 1912. After a presentation of Rosenthal's documentary, a guest panel of descendants, Portland Press Herald columnist and Salt board member Bill Nemitz, and members of Maine's African-American community led a discussion of Malaga Island and the effects the eviction has today. NYC --- UnionDocs host... Once Upon a Time in Maine: Radio Stories from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. The event was a "tremendous success" exclaims Josh Gleason, the show's curator and Salt Radio Alum. Over 60 people filled the seats, floor, and hallway to listen to selected Salt radio pieces. Following the presentation the crowd engaged in a Q/A session and open discussion of the Salt radio pieces. According to Operations Manager, Amber Cortes, the show was UnionDocs "best ever attendance" for an audio event. This is the first of hopefully many future collaborations between Salt and UnionDocs.

As a result, she developed a keen sense of observation and a desire "to experience the diversity of our world." Spring 2008 alum Erin Davis won BEST NEW ARTIST for a piece called Except Me that she produced as part of her Salt work while a radio student last spring. Alum Melissa Robbins who spent fall 2003 at Salt took home the SILVER AWARD for BEST DOCUMENTARY for her piece entitled Growing Up in the System. Meet Erin and Melissa and hear their work here. In case you haven't heard, Salt has a new place to call home: 561 Congress Street. In the heart of Portland's Downtown Arts District, our new 7,000 square foot, first floor space is being redesigned from the floor up. Both Zachau Construction of Freeport and architects and designers at SMRT of Portland have created a space crafted especially for the unique needs of both our students and our supportive community of artists and documentary lovers. In addition to creative classrooms and beautiful staff offices, we will soon complete construction on a 50-seat auditorium/movie theater/lecture hall with a spacious adjoining gallery space. Beyond all the fabulous functional aspects that we've considered, architectural details, green design, and handicap accessibility have been essential guiding factors in the creation of our new spot. Our hope is that the new Salt home is not only a great place to learn, but also an exciting place for community events that center around Salt's driving force: great documentary work. Writing// Isaac Kestenbaum Issac had been writing for the Portland Press Herald for almost a year when he applied to Salt.
