Friday, April 17 marked the final visit with the Portland Phoenix's managing editor Jeff Inglis. Other visitors included Chris Busby, the editor of <a href= http://www.thebollard.com/bollard/ %u201Ctarget=_blank%u201D>the Bollard</a>; Paul Doiron, the editor of <a href= http://www.downeast.com/ %u201Ctarget=_blank%u201D>Down East Magazine</a>, Nancy Heiser, managing editor of <a href= http://www.portcitylife.com/ %u201Ctarget=_blank%u201D>Port City Life</a> and David Tyler, the editor of the <a href= http://www.workingwaterfront.com/ %u201Ctarget=_blank%u201D>The Working Waterfront</a> and the <a href= http://www.islandinstitute.org/island-journals.php %u201Ctarget=_blank%u201D>The Island Journal</a> While some stuck to their lecture outline and talking points, some editors had some interesting stories to tell about the lengths they are willing to go to for the story. During his visit, Busby regailed the class with an entertaining story about digging through people's trash while reporting <a href= http://www.thebollard.com/bollard/?p=1950%u201Ctarget=_blank%u201D>"Chasing Chellie"</a>. It also got students thinking about the ethical implications of doing similar stuff for their own stories. While all editors answered questions about the particulars of their publication, they also fielded any and all questions students had about the fate of journalism, freelancing, how to find and report stories, and rank gossip about Portland's journalism scene. Students also had the opportunity to pitch for publication the 1,000 and 3,000-word stories they have been working on all semester. Rosenthal's hour-long documentary and Philbrick's present-day photographs and constructed imagery of historical documents tell the story of how the residents of Malaga Island, a small island near Phippsburg, Maine, were evicted from their homes in 1912. After a presentation of Rosenthal's documentary, a guest panel of descendants, Portland Press Herald columnist and Salt board member Bill Nemitz, and members of Maine's African-American community led a discussion of Malaga Island and the effects the eviction has today. The event was a "tremendous success" exclaims Josh Gleason, the show's curator and Salt Radio Alum. Over 60 people filled the seats, floor, and hallway to listen to selected Salt radio pieces. Following the presentation the crowd engaged in a Q/A session and open discussion of the Salt radio pieces. According to Operations Manager, Amber Cortes, the show was UnionDocs "best ever attendance" for an audio event. Alum <strong>Melissa Robbins</strong> who spent fall 2003 at Salt took home the SILVER AWARD for BEST DOCUMENTARY for her piece entitled <i>Growing Up in the System</i>. In the heart of Portland's Downtown Arts District, our new 7,000 square foot, first floor space is being redesigned from the floor up. Both Zachau Construction of Freeport and architects and designers at <a href="http://www.smrtinc.com" target="_blank">SMRT</a> of Portland have created a space crafted especially for the unique needs of both our students and our supportive community of artists and documentary lovers. In addition to creative classrooms and beautiful staff offices, we will soon complete construction on a 50-seat auditorium/movie theater/lecture hall with a spacious adjoining gallery space. Beyond all the fabulous functional aspects that we've considered, architectural details, green design, and handicap accessibility have been essential guiding factors in the creation of our new spot. Our hope is that the new Salt home is not only a great place to learn, but also an exciting place for community events that center around Salt's driving force: great documentary work.
