Flash Forward 2012

The Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward program is an annual competition that showcases the work being created by the very best emerging photographers from Canada, the UK and the United States. Every year, judges from each of the participating and international countries review the submitted work and identify those young people that they believe show great promise as professional fine art or documentary photographers.

The Flash Forward 2012 Group Show features a select cross-section chosen from the bodies of work featured in the competition catalog. The photography covers all genres from documentary, photojournalism and fine art studio practices and shows how each of these young photographers are affected and influenced by their mentors, interests and choices of subject matter.

The Flash Forward 2012 Group Show pays tribute to the diversity of the annual program and its growing profile, offering evidence that the best emerging photographers are cutting edge of the direction that photography will take in future years.

Grace Before Dying: photographs by Lori Waselchuk

 Grace Before Dying tells the emotional story of an extraordinary breakthrough in humanity that has helped to transform one of the most dangerous maximum security prisons in the United States, the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, into one of the least violent. By allowing volunteer inmates to comfort fellow inmates who are elderly or terminally ill, a new hospice program helps convicts assert and affirm their humanity in an environment designed to isolate and punish. Poignant quotes from the incarcerated hospice volunteers and patients accompany searing photographs that chart the development of the program through a carefully built sequence.

 

Award-winning photographer Lori Waselchuk not only shows a culture of caring and compassion that challenges stereotypes of the incarcerated, but also provides an intimate and personal perspective on what long-term and life sentences signify for those inside.

 

 

Lori Waselchuk is a documentary photographer whose photographs have appeared in magazines and newspapers worldwide, including Newsweek, LIFE, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times. Her work is exhibited internationally and is part of collections including the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art and the South African National Gallery.

Speak Out Tunisia

Citizen Journalism Training Project

Speak Out Tunisia is a citizen journalism training project that aims to teach a diverse group of Tunisian citizens about digital media and online journalism. After 23 years of oppression without a free press under Dictator Ben Ali, Speak Out Tunisia seeks to return the power of a free and fair press to the Tunisian people. After the success of our first Speak Out Tunisia training in the spring of 2012, we are launching our second training for another two groups of citizens– one beginner group and one advanced group — for three weeks in the coastal city of Monastir in January 2013. Anne Bailey will be the lead instructor again for this second session.

After fifteen weeks of hard work, tinder celebrates the work of our fall 2012 class with an exhibition of powerful and intimate Maine stories. Join us on December 13th for a grand opening reception, open house and virtual story telling extravaganza. The building will be bursting at the seams with readings of the written word, radio listening, and photography + multimedia viewings by the following students. You won’t want to miss it! But if you do… the exhibit will be up through February 8, 2013 for 1st Fridays and during regular gallery hours: Tuesday-Friday 12-4:30
