Senior Online News Editor


Oversees news produced for kut.org and distributed across online platforms. Plans and executes social media campaigns to promote KUT News stories and projects. Coordinates online assignments and projects with the KUT reporting staff, initiates story ideas, concepts and on technical aspects of kut.org.

Essential Functions

Oversees daily operation of kut.org. Assigns and edits stories, photographs, graphics, videos, audio and other news content for digital platforms. Optimizes radio stories for online presentation, including headline writing, SEO, social media readiness, etc. Creates web-only news content crafted to take full advantage of the medium and perform well online, including maps, infographics and other data visualizations. Participates in editorial meetings with ideas and suggestions for daily stories. Helps plan long-term coverage and coverage streams with KUT news management. Maintains daily liaison with editors about developing stories. Conveys consistent station voice across various online platforms. Keeps ahead of the curve on local and national developments as they relate to online news delivery, presentation, social media, etc. Oversees design and technical issues at kut.org. Manages communication about technical content updates from KUT tech team and NPR Digital Services to news staff. Reports and produces online breaking news reports that meet KUT News guidelines, standards and deadlines. Helps formulate coverage plan for major breaking news across platforms by working collaboratively with KUT News management and other staff to report major breaking news events. Ensures that all materials produced for the site meet KUT program standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, objectivity and balance.

Licenses: Class “C” Operator’s Driver’s License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver’s License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Marginal/Incidental functions

May occasionally appear on-air to discuss breaking news or online projects. May make public appearances at events promoting KUT News or its outreach activities. Other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Radio/Television/Film, Communications, Journalism or related field. Five years of professional experience reporting and editing news online. Knowledge of current and emerging technologies impacting journalism, including web, mobile and social media. Knowledge of the operations of local and national public media. Demonstrated understanding of online news content use and delivery in substance, style, format, and design. Skill and experience in managing online news operations. Experience generating web specific news content. Excellent verbal, writing and editing skills. Experience training and mentoring interns and other staff to company guidelines, standards and deadlines. Must be able to multitask, meet deadlines. HTML, JavaScript skills and multimedia production experience. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

At least 5 years full-time experience in online news reporting and editing, demonstrating increasing responsibilities. Two years of public radio and/or online public media news reporting within the past five years. Familiarity with NPR’s Core Publisher CMS. Familiarity with data visualization tools. Experience with digital production technologies and audience engagement techniques. A desire to explore Austin’s diverse communities and seek out underrepresented voices. Experience appearing on-air in breaking news situations.
